Skydragon Safe? And A White Elephant Update

Ok so I am alot behind on my local news, well that’s what happens when May 2-4 weekend happens, everything else fades to grey. That being said, looks like offically Skydragon may have a local source to save it, please read it in full.

Highlights are- To date we have sold $10,000 in community bonds, with the expectation of $15,000 more being sold shortly as follow-up contacts are made with interested parties                                                                                                                                The Coop is now in the final stages of securing a deal with private financiers. This deal is a significant improvement on the one  currently  held… and will announce the formal closure of the deal when “the ink is dry”.

A new board will oversee the organization from thenceforth. Current stakeholder groups being considered for the new organization include Coop managers, Coop staff, investors, community members, and partner organizations.

The news is good so far, hopefully it all works out but I think many Hamilton non-profits can learn a thing or two here by creating something unique that is really community oriented and sticking to their core princaples Skydragon has managed to weather the storm and hopefully come out stronger for it. Whether you agree or disagree with some of their politics the Skydraon does offer many reasons for people to come downtown and enjoy  what makes the city great.

Well June is quickly approaching and the people behind White Elephant are busy getting the store ready for June hopefully. Take a look at their Blog Love It Alot for more details! Here’s a nice picture from their site…..

(As a side note to analytics Jane, last art crawl day the hits to the site trippled and May two four weekend was are lowest in a long time for traffic to the site.)

Mac Art History Under Attack Again!

EMERGENCY-SKYDRAGON MAY CLOSE!

Ok so I just came back from a meeting, still in progress, all about the Skydragon Centre and I want to update people on the basics.

They need roughly $270000.00 so that’s about 13,500 people giving $20 each in about 25 days.

(The $270000 is the morgage and about $25000 line of credit)

They also owe aprox $133000.00 on a second mortgage held by a private individual and owe about $80000.00 on bonds.  These two areas don’t seem to be concerned with their money being returned.

The teacher’s credit union hold’s the mortgage and its aprox 8% also with the $133000. (I am unsure if this is normal or not)

How did they get there, essentially they hit on a perfect storm of their mistakes and the areas changes. Skydragon was late on paying provincial taxes (as well as other bills from time to time) this I believe affected their credit history so dispite their good payment history the credit union let them know they would not renew the mortgage.

Also during the meeting it was let out that  Reardon’s Resturants lease was not renewed and that the parking lot across the street has been sold (this is rumor I don’t know how true this is.). If it is true, the recent sale of the Downtown Art Centre  maybe part of a bigger picture.

Employees at the centre talked about the lack of transparency and others discussed selling the building and starting again. Some expressed anger about the situation and at times the conversation the issue of the Pan Am games influencing this issue. Others felt the gentrification on James St North had also played a hand.

What does the skydragon need? More time! It needs time to find either a alternative mortgage lender/ private individual or simply people donating money.

While I personally feel the skydragon did make many mistakes in terms of paying bills on time, etc. I also feel it is worth saving.

The skydragon has a a small handfull employees and for a non-profit I’m pretty impressed. They continually have events and contribute to the vibrant aspect of the downtown scene in music and in art. One of the few green cafe’s in the downtown area. Also if it goes I don’t think its coming back.

While I may not agree with their message or past practices to employees I think the net positive gain is huge. (If someone told me it was either skydragon or 500 jobs I would choose the jobs but I don’t think this is the case.)

What You Can Do?

Give $20 dollars to Skydragon if 13,500 people do it they can save it.

We Need Bloggers

So I am gearing up for a couple special projects in the next couple months so I am making a call out for anyone who wants to blog on the site. Basically the requirements are pretty simple once a month post about something Hamilton or Art or Local/Regional Arty kinda posts. (Also in case you didn’t realize nothing pornographic, homophobic, racist.  As well no super commerical spammers either, ie)here’s a blog about apple or vitamin juice and oops I get paid by them marketing….. ) Thanks!

Oh I almost forgot I can’t afford to pay you, so don’t expect anything.

Lego Cake Returns!

Ok so originally I use to have a post about a Lego Cake and it was one of the biggest hits the site ever got, so since this is kind of a site update news blog post I thought I’d mention it again! (Cake is more interesting anyways)  Enjoy the picture care of the Art of Dessert! Anyways site update news, got a couple people here to help with the posting and always looking for more. Basically the idea is one post a month from a bunch of people equals less work from me and more content to get people to know what is happening in Hamilton’s Art Scene! Also in the next while I will do artist features again, so please recommend someone! Also any millionaires who want to dump a bunch of adds on my site so I can quit my day job please feel free!

Back to Lego Cakes, I really like this next cake by Betty Crocker! It looks sooooo yummmy!!! If someone wants to make it for me please do!

Oh snap here’s the video for all you budding Martha Stewarts!

And as well my friend Mike has been updating his comic Orneryboy alot and its just getting good go check it out!!!
