HAMILTON ARTISTS INC – Teri Donovan – Half Life

Co-mingling wallpaper patterns and paint layers, Donovan layers the past with the present to foreshadow a future embedded with forgotten remnants. Old notions, styles, and behaviours, like old wallpaper, are replaced by the new, but are never really gone. In the guise of memory and desire they linger on in a spectral half-life projecting into the future where they emerge to be re-enacted, re-contextualized, and re-interpreted.

Donovan’s work addresses that tenacious desire for life that guarantees the past’s role in the present and the future, and simultaneously suggests how the present secures its own place as it moves towards its inevitable fate.

Exhibition runs until August 14, 2010

  • Edward Wrigley says:

White elephant is not a gallery. Why it is listed as a gallery

  • admin says:

they actually do have the occasional art show and besides the site is about james st and not strictly galleries. yes its subjective, sorry about that

  • J Wilbur says:

OK then, I’m wondering about all the other places on James in the Art Crawl District that ARE NOT included, three off the top of my head: The Tribal Gallery, The Woodpecker Handicraft Gallery and Linda’s Fashion Studio. Is this site totally personal, rather than either subjective or objective??

  • admin says:

I have added woodpecker’s site to the listings, I was unable to find the other stores sites.

  • J Wilbur says:

Great, thanks for the quick response.

Sorry to say I misspelled Olinda’s Fashion Studio in my last posting, oops. You’re right, she doesn’t have a site yet.

Here’s a short URL link to a page I built for The Tribal Gallery: http://thurly.net//3ba

I also added a link to your site from my Art Crawl Page: http://www.HamiltonArtcrawl.ca

I’m putting together a complex links page for everyone on the Street with a web site: http://thurly.net//3gl

I’m also building pages for people on the street without any web presence. For example the page I’m putting up for Gwen Duncan at the Tribal Gallery: http://thurly.net//3ba

I’m hoping to get to others like Olinda in the near future.

  • Justin says:

I ended up going Friday, but didn’t go to half of the galleries that were open. I was contemplating to go to Sonic Uynion, but it looked closed up. GAH. Ah well, hopefully next month it’ll be just as good or better, and not as cold. This thing we call, Artcrawl is what I call love.

Do any of the galleries, or places open for the artcrawl allow photography at all? We have to promote this stuff!

Can’t wait until it gets warmer out, it’s going to rock… Same with the next Supercrawl. Oh man.

  • Justin says:

And I just realized this was a 2009 post. :D

  • I have a red Hat group that would be interested in doing this friday night crawl now that it is
2010 will this still be on going in april may june ?

  • admin says:

Yes, every second friday of the month, so Feburary would be the next one!

  • Alam says:

How can someone get involved in showing at one of these Art Crawls?

  • admin says:

Well I would first suggest coming to the next one, see how it is, meet some gallery owners, etc. You know from downtown Hamilton its a 45min bus ride in non-rush hour times.

  • A new listing for this upcoming crawl.

    Not Without an Audience
Join us on May 14, 2010 for the opening of an exhibition of paintings and block prints by Cornelia Peckart at Hamilton’s premier rock and roll bar: This Ain’t Hollywood.

Not Without an Audience is an exhibition created for a live music venue. The spotlight is focused on the audience as they interact before, during and after a show.

An audience is vital for the success and survival of bars, bands and the musical style of rock and roll. Without an audience there is no show.

Cornelia Peckart has created an imaginary audience that fills the wall space with people having a good time.

Block prints, applied to wood, glass, paper and steel sheeting show audiences dancing and enjoying themselves. The images have a gestural quality with bold lines, which give the work a comic book feel.

Originally from Hamilton, Cornelia resettled in Hamilton in 2008 after twenty five years away. She attended the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, with majors in Installation Art and Printmaking. She has lived, worked and exhibited in Toronto, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Rotterdam and Berlin.

Recent exhibitions and performances by Cornelia Peckart include; A series of ten gouache paintings titled ‘One in Ten’ as part of the September 2010 Good Medicine Show at *Hotshot Gallery on Toronto; A performance of ‘Treat System: Part One’ October 2010 at Nuit Blanche in Toronto; A performance of ‘Treat System: Part Two, A line is a line…’ at the November 2010 James St North Art Crawl in Hamilton.

The exhibition runs from May 7 – June 2, 2010.

For more information on Cornelia visit her blog at http://www.corneliapeckart.com.

  • John Wilbur says:

Why is the publisher of this blog unknown and never revealed?

Why is there no way to contact this blog via email? Despite repeated statements here that all anyone has to do is ask. ASKING AGAIN!

Why can’t I get anything about my new James North Gallery listed on this blog?

Why can’t I get my gallery’s web site listed on this blog?

I know this is not a public service but you purport to report on the Arts Crawl but it seems you only report on what you like about the Arts Crawl.
